Do airlines
really understand the sensitive nature of animal transport? |
 |
Absolutely! Over 500 animals
take-off for destinations around Australia every day. Animal
transport is considered an important part of every airline’s
service. From a Goldfish to a Golden Retriever, airline staff
go to great lengths to ensure all animals arrive in the picture
of health. They are also last on and first off! |
 |
Where do they travel on the
plane? |
 |
Animals travel in a compartment which is usually
at the rear of the plane. This is air-conditioned and pressurised
in exactly the same way as the passenger cabin. |
 |
Should I treat my pet to
a big meal before the flight? |
 |
To avoid travel sickness, we recommend no feeding
at least six hours before arrival at the airport. |
 |
What about sedatives to make
the journey go quicker? |
 |
Preferably not. All the latest medical studies
show that sedation causes far more trouble than it is worth*.
|
 |
How long before take-off
must animals arrive at the airport? |
 |
Usually 90 minutes before take-off for domestic
flights. Some regional centres will accept livestock just an
hour before. However, these days with higher security at all
airports, itís wise to check in advance with your local Dogtainers
office or the airport. |
 |
What can I put in with my
pet to make it feel more at home? |
 |
A pet blanket or a soft toy can help your pet
settle in for the journey ahead. Items such as bean bags, pet
food, bones, sheepskins and anything with metal, are all strictly
prohibited on all flights. Be sure to ask us first! |
 |
Can dogs and cats travel
with their collars on? |
 |
Yes, but choker chains are not a good idea.
Leads also arenít allowed in the crate. However, they can simply
be clipped on the outside. |
 |
Do I keep the hire crate
for my return flight? |
 |
No, as part of our service, we will have a sterilised
and disinfected one waiting for you. |
 |
If I’m flying in Australia
on an international flight, can my pet travel on the same flight? |
 |
At this stage unfortunately not! Customs &
Quarantine controls over contents on international flights
prohibit animals travelling domestically. The airlines are
currently
reviewing their policy at present, so check with Dogtainers
for updates. |
 |
What else can I do to ensure
my animal has a good trip? |
 |
First always follow the “W & W”
Rule by letting your animal have water and a walk prior to departure.
Most important: don’t get stressed. Animals pick-up on
your stress very quickly. Simply let us take the hassles out
of animal transport for you. As Australia’s largest animal
transport network, it is what we do best. |
